Day 1 - Arrive and explore Zurich's festive shopping

Zurich goes in for Christmas in a big way with attractions across the city. Outside the Opera House you will find the Christmas Village, with around 100 market stalls in the square. As well as traditional handcrafted gifts, you will find mulled wine & Swiss fondue huts. There are enchanting mini huts for the little ones such as Samiclaus post office, a nostalgic carousel and a mini train.

In the heart of the Old Town is one of Zurich most romantic Christmas Markets. Wander the cobbled alleys in Nierdorf quarter with the guild houses lit up with Christmas lights for a cosy, magical feel and browse the handicrafts, decorations, sweet treats and baked goods.

The Christkindlimarkt takes place indoors at the main station’s concourse, perfect for those chillier days and nights. There are plenty of stalls and a 15 metre sparkling tree! A huge choice of gifts tempt you over to beautifully decorated market stands and there is plenty of opportunity to enjoy a glass of bubbles or a hot bite to eat.

Zurich Travel Card

The Zurich Card offers unlimited 2nd class travel by bus, rail and cable car throughout the city and its surrounding area, including local boat trips on the lake and the Limmat river. There is also free or reduced entrance to many museums and restaurant discounts.

29 Sfrs for 24 hours | 56 Sfrs for 72 hours

The card is available to buy online or at the airport and railway stations.

Day 2 - Take time to explore the region

Uetliberg is Zürich's local mountain and offers panoramic views over the city, the lake and towards the Alps. Try the 'Planet Trail' -  a 2 hour woodland walk from Uetliberg to Felsenegg that takes you past models of the solar system and boasts wonderful lake views. Other visits worth making include Schaffhausen and the Rhine Falls - the largest waterfall in Europe - and the tempting delights of the Lindt Home Of Chocolate, situated on Lake Zurich and with plenty of opportunities to try samples.

After your day out, Zurich's evening attractions await. The high street shops are open late for more shopping or you may like to head back to the markets. You have a huge choice of restaurants catering to all tastes.

Day 3 - Make the most of the last day

If you have booked a later flight home you still have time to enjoy Zurich on your last day (the airport is only 15 minutes away). The city has a lovely location on the Limmat river, close to Lake Zurich and it is a joy to take a boat ride. The Lindenhof is a great place from which to enjoy glorious views of the Old Town and you'll enjoy wandering the historic narrow streets with oriel windows. There are many fascinating churches here - St. Peter’s is the oldest and boasts the largest clock face in Europe. There are 150 museums to choose from. Favourites include the Swiss National Museum, the Fine Art Museum (Rodin's seven metre high 'Gates of Hell' bronze door makes for a grand first impression) and the FIFA Museum where you can see the original World Cup Trophy and enjoy interactive footballing experiences.
