Your time in Eastern Switzerland - things to see and do
St. Gallen is one of Switzerland's most interesting historical towns, where you can explore the UNESCO World Heritage Abbey district. A little way to the north is the river Rhine, which you can cruise along, taking in charming medieval towns such as Stein am Rhein - a perfect spot for lunch amongst the colourful merchants' houses. Near Winterthur and Schaffhausen are the amazing Rhine Falls - the largest in Europe and a must see while in the area. You can visit the thundering Falls on a boat trip or make your way to a platform in the midst of the Falls themselves! Continuing the theme of water, Bad Ragaz is renowned for its thermal spa - make time to 'take the waters' - and Lake Constance is always a favourite.
This quieter corner of Switzerland offers some very tranquil beauty spots and we can highly recommend the Appenzellerland region for its extremely scenic walks and an atmosphere and views that are unique in the country.

Walking in the region
Use the excellent transport network to visit the Appenzell mountains. There are some delightful walks here, from gentle strolls to more challenging hikes. We recommend the Europa-Rundweg circular trail with spectacular views and the walk to the welcoming Aeschler hostelry in the Alpstein area, famously built into the rockface. Toggenburg also offers beautiful scenery - try the Unterwasser Trail with its waterfalls, or the Säntis Trail which takes you to the area's most beautiful vantage point over Toggenburg and Lake Constance.
