Braunwald Holidays

Find genuine peace and quiet in the heart of the Glarus Alps

Nestled high above the Linth Valley in the Glarus Alps, Braunwald offers a peaceful mountain retreat surrounded by spectacular alpine scenery. Visitors can enjoy traditional horse-drawn carriage rides along chalet-lined lanes, hike to the enchanting Oberblegisee beneath the towering Glärnisch massif, or visit the Alpinmuseum to discover the geological history of Switzerland. The surrounding valley is home to waterfalls, alpine meadows, traditional villages, and panoramic walking trails, creating a destination rich in both natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Braunwald is the perfect destination for getting away from it all. Book a holiday here if you are seeking tranquillity and natural beauty. In summer, flower-filled meadows and over 70km of walking trails lead through forests, pastures, and up to panoramic viewpoints of the Tödi massif, with cable cars providing easy access to higher slopes. In winter, Braunwald transforms into a cosy snow-covered retreat with family-friendly skiing, sledging, and winter walking trails, remaining welcoming and unspoilt year-round.

What to see and do from Braunwald

With more than 30 mountain peaks surrounding the village, Braunwald is a paradise for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. From Braunwaldalp, enjoy breathtaking views of the 3,613m Tödi and the striking twin peaks of the Ortstock. Beyond Braunwald, the upper Linth Valley offers even more natural beauty. Discover the impressive Berglistüber waterfall, visit the tranquil shores of Walensee beneath the dramatic Churfirsten mountains, or explore Glarus, Switzerland’s smallest cantonal capital. Nearby attractions also include the stunning Lake Klöntal and the village of Elm, gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage landscape of Sardona and the remarkable natural phenomenon known as Martin’s Hole.

For those wishing to venture further afield, Chur, Switzerland's oldest town, boasts a charming Gothic Old Town dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, as well as an impressive 800-year-old cathedral featuring a magnificent carved altar. The historic area around Martinsplatz is perfect for a stroll, while the Saturday market (May to October) showcases regional specialties including Bündnerfleisch and local cheeses. Just over two hours away is Appenzell, a picturesque Swiss town with pedestrianised old centre, where 16th-century buildings are decorated with ornate frescoes. Don't miss the Rhine Falls - a long day out, but with the reward of fantastic views over Europe's largest waterfall which is particularly impressive during the summer months.

Visit a UNESCO World Heritage Site from Braunwald

See with your own eyes how mighty mountains are created. The Alps were formed by the slow collision of African and European plates, as layers of rock fold over each other. From the visitor centres in Glarus and Elm you can clearly see the layers in this beautiful natural phenomenon. Find more Swiss World Heritage Sites here.
