Highlights

Journey to the mountain

The Matterhorn Express is a gondola ride which takes you from the the village of Zermatt to the scenic area of Schwarzsee.

The modern gondolas depart regularly throughout the day and offer fantastic views as you travel. The first stage takes you up to Furi at 1,867m. You can alight here for walks or refreshements, or continue on the second stage of the Matterhorn Express gondola to Schwarzsee at 2,552m. The entire journey takes around 20 minutes.

Refreshments

If you are spending time in Furi, there are two restaurants close to the cable car station and another few along various walking trails. Try the Bergrestaurant Furi for homestyle Swiss cuisine and Valais specialities such as fondue, 'Furri-Rösti' with cheese and fried egg and homemade cakes.

The Hotel Restaurant Schwarzsee is located at close to the second cable car station and offers hot meals and various fondues, raclette and Swiss specialities. There is a patio and a garden, and a magnificent view of the Matterhorn.

Walking

You'll have a wonderful choice of walks from Furi and Schwarzsee. A particularly enjoyable one is the Larch Walk which takes you from the idyllic Schwarzsee lake along a mountain flank towards Hermettje, before coming back to Furi through a ruggedly romantic larch forest. The walk takes around 4 hours.

From Furi you can walk to view the Gorner Glacier at the fascinating Dossen Glacier Garden - the scenic round trip takes just under 3 hours. In the garden you will see the geographical boundaries within which the glacier has moved back and forth over the centuries. There are plenty of interesting geological features for you to look out for.

Ricola herb garden

From Furi, you can walk down the the Ricola herb garden. The garden is located in an idyllic spot in Blatten at an altitude of about 1,700m. Visitors can learn about the 13 plants that go into Ricola's world-famous herb drops through touch, taste and smell. Information panels describe each plant and its properties.

The herbs include horehound, burnet, cowslip, speedwell, plantain, yarrow, mallow, lady's mantle, marshmallow, elder, peppermint, sage and thyme. Free entry.
