Take the bus to Miglieglia to connect with the cable car to the top of one of the most panoramic and majestic summits of southern Switzerland. Monte Lema at 1,624m has a natural green terrace overlooking the southern valleys of Ticino and the lakes of Lugano and Maggiore, with plenty of walks and a panoramic restaurant.

Highlights

Cable car

The cable cars operate every half an hour and transport passengers a distance of 2,536m, over an altitude difference of 849m. The journey takes around 10 minutes. 

Views from Monte Lema

Monte Lema stands at 1,624m and offers glorious views. In the foreground you can see cattle grazing in the meadows, a little further are the valleys of the Ticino region, Lake Lugano and Lake Maggiore. In the distance you can see the the high Alps, from the snow-capped Graubünden and Bernese Alps, to the Valais peaks with their glaciers.

Walking on the mountain

With its 80km hiking network, Monte Lema is a true paradise for scenic mountain walks amongst meadows, with views of the sparkling lakes.

Along your way you may come across the large meadow where model aircraft enthusiasts fly their planes on the alpine thermals. You may also spot the radar weather station and the astronomical observatory.

Traversata hike

Monte Lema is the starting point for one of Switzerlandâ??s most beautiful mountain hikes, which leads to the Monte Tamaro. The five hour Traversata hike leads along the mountain ridge of the Swiss-Italian border to Alpe Foppa on Tamaro. From here you can hike down to Rivera and take the train back to Lugano.

Refreshments

The renovated Restaurant Vetta Monte Lema offers local dishes which you can enjoy inside or on the large panoramic terrace. There are also plenty of picnic spots.


Directions

From Lugano, take the short train journey to Lamone-Cadempino, then change to the bus for Miglieglia. The whole journey takes about an hour. From Miglieglia, the cable car departs every 30 minutes and is wheelchair accessible.

Should you want a mountain hike, it is possible to walk up from Miglieglia in about 3 hours.
