Highlights

Journey into the mountains

The famous red funicular which takes you up to Muottas Muragl is over 100 years old and tackles the steep slope from the base station at 1,738m to the top station at 2,456m very smoothly, offering fabulous views.

The journey to Alp Languard at 2,330m is made by chairlift with more outstanding views.

Refreshments

The Bergrestaurant Alp Languard offer a treat for all the senses, with views over the Piz Palü and the Bernina massif. You can reach the restaurant from the chairlift or the hiking path - and on summer evenings you can walk back down to the valley from the restaurant on a trail lit by torches.

The Romantik Restaurant at Muottas Muragl has excellent cuisine in one of the most beautiful Engadin vantage points. The panoramic terrace is a delightful spot to relax and take in the view.

There are other restaurants and mountain huts available in the area.

Memorable alpine walks

The 7km panorama trail between Muottas Muragl and Alp Languard is worth a special mention, as it is virtually flat and features the charming Munt da la Bês-cha mountain restaurant halfway along. The total walking time is approximately 2½ hours. On arrival at Alp Languard, you can take the chairlift back down to Pontresina.

There are plenty of other walks from both Muottas Muragl and Alp Languard to suit all abilities. A themed walk is the Climate Trail, with its 18 information panels which explain the current changes to the sensitive Alpine environment - such as the retreating permafrost above Pontresina. Or you could follow in the footsteps of the artist Giovanni Segantini to one of the most beautiful vantage points in the Upper Engadin at Schafberg, with breathtaking views of the lake plateau and the Bernina Massif.

Families

Storm the fortress at the Romantik restaurant, 2,456m above sea level!  With climbing and slides, children will enjoy this playground on the observation platform.

You can also see the SINE SOLE SILEO: the most accurate sundial in the world! In summer, it functions as a sundial, and in winter, as an almost equally precise moondial. Its unique construction makes it possible to read the time to an accuracy of 10 seconds.

Directions

You can take the bus from St. Moritz to Muottas Muragl and Alp Languard valley stations. From Pontresina, you could take the short bus ride, or even walk.

The mountain transports depart every half an hour throughout the day.
