Mount Zugerberg is a scenic mountain overlooking Zug, Switzerland, known for its lush forests, beautiful hiking trails, and panoramic views of Lake Zug and the Alps. The Zugerbergbahn funicular takes around 8 minutes to reach the mountain at approximately 925 metres above sea level. Once there, enjoy peaceful forests, hiking trails, and spectacular Alpine views. For the more adventurous, hike the Königsroute towards Wildspitz, reaching the summit at 1,580 metres.

Zug's local mountain by scenic funicular
Since 1907, the Zugerbergbahn has connected the city of Zug with its beautiful local mountain, Zugerberg. Originally built to make the mountain more accessible to visitors, this historic funicular quickly became a much-loved part of life in the region.
Today, the journey remains as charming as ever, carrying visitors from Schönegg up through the forest to the peaceful heights of Zugerberg. Along the way, passengers can enjoy beautiful views across the surrounding landscape, while at the summit, a network of walking trails, nature and panoramic vistas awaits.
More than a means of transport, the Zugerbergbahn is a small piece of Zug’s history - linking generations of visitors with the natural beauty of the mountain for more than a century.
Zugerberg light trail at Christmas
At Christmas, Zugerberg transforms into a magical winter wonderland. From early December until the beginning of January, hundreds of candles illuminate a beautiful 1.2 km forest trail, guiding visitors through the peaceful winter woods towards the glowing Zugiblubbi house and its enchanting nativity scene.
The Trail of Lights comes alive each evening, creating a warm and magical atmosphere against the crisp mountain air and snowy landscape. The Zugerbergbahn also runs regularly into the evening, making it easy for families and visitors to enjoy this special experience after sunset.
During the festive season, children can also look forward to special appearances and activities featuring Zugiblubbi and Samichlaus, adding even more Christmas magic to the experience.
With twinkling lights, peaceful woodland paths and breathtaking winter scenery, Zugerberg offers a truly magical way to celebrate the Christmas season high above Zug.
Zugerberg mountain restaurants
There are several welcoming restaurants to enjoy during your time on Zugerberg. Restaurant Zugerberg, located beside the cable-car station, serves traditional Swiss and European-style cuisine, including hearty favourites such as rösti and cordon bleu, with beautiful views over Lake Zug and the surrounding mountains.
Just a short walk from the station, Vordergeissboden offers traditional Swiss mountain cuisine, with seasonal dishes and comforting favourites such as cheese fondue. Further into the countryside, Restaurant Hintergeissboden offers rustic, home-style Swiss cooking in a peaceful mountain setting - perfect for enjoying a relaxed, hearty meal surrounded by nature.
Hiking trails and more
The Zugerberg Bahn takes you from Schönegg to 925 metres above sea level in just eight minutes, where a beautiful mountain landscape awaits. Families can enjoy gentle walks through forests and meadows, explore the sculpture trail, stop for a barbecue at one of the many fire pits, or let the children have fun at the Schattwäldli adventure playground with its wooden climbing structures and zip line. With around 80 kilometres of marked hiking trails, there are routes to suit different ages and abilities, including family-friendly circular trails starting at the mountain station. For more experienced adult hikers, longer and more challenging routes lead through the surrounding countryside towards Wildspitz, the highest point in the canton of Zug at 1,580 metres, offering rewarding panoramic views along the way. In winter, the landscape becomes even more magical, with opportunities for winter walks, sledging, cross-country skiing and beginner skiing, making Zugerberg a wonderful destination to enjoy throughout the year.
Directions
Zugerberg is very easy to reach from Zug city centre. Take a bus from Zug train station to Schönegg. From there, take the 8 minute funicular ride up to the mountain and take in the view before you explore this beautiful local mountain.
