Day 3 - Gotthard Panorama Express

Start your day with a spectacular 3-hour journey aboard the Gotthard Panorama Express, one of Switzerland’s most historic rail routes.

Travel in first-class comfort, with snacks and drinks served at your seat, while a knowledgeable onboard guide shares the fascinating story of the Gotthard line.

The train climbs through the dramatic Gotthard region, passing steep mountainsides, icy rivers and charming Alpine villages. A highlight is the original Gotthard Tunnel, a 15 km engineering marvel opened in 1882, where a short presentation brings its history to life. Emerging from the tunnel, the landscape transforms as you enter Central Switzerland. Marvel at the famous triple loop at Wassen, offering three different views of the village church, before descending toward Lake Lucerne with panoramic views of glaciers and peaks. Continue to Arth-Goldau, gateway to Mount Rigi, the 'Queen of the Mountains', where a cogwheel railway carries you to 1,798 metres for breathtaking Alpine and lake views.

After a full day of scenic travel and history, return to Lugano aboard regular mainline trains - completing a truly memorable Swiss adventure.

Less than 20 minutes by train, Bellinzona is a captivating town where medieval walls frame sun-drenched piazzas and three majestic castles dominate the skyline. Recognised by UNESCO, the castles reflect the town’s strategic importance at the Alpine crossroads.

Castelgrande offers sweeping views over the Old Town, Montebello enchants with its medieval character, and Sasso Corbaro rewards visitors with panoramic scenery. Explore uphill for an active experience or begin at the top for an easier downhill stroll. Beyond the castles, lively markets and elegant streets create a wonderful Italian atmosphere. Visit the Renaissance Chiesa Collegiata dei Santi Pietro e Stefano (Church of Saints Peter and Stephen), browse charming boutiques, and enjoy a relaxed lunch with a glass of local Merlot. Art lovers can also discover Villa dei Cedri, set among peaceful gardens and vineyards.

Back in Lugano, consider a lakeside evening aboard the Ceresio Grotti Tour, cruising to a traditional grotti for authentic Ticino dishes and local wines in a relaxed outdoor setting at spots like San Rocco, Grotto Pescatori and Grotto Elvezia. The tour typically runs Thursday to Saturday evenings - please check current dates before booking.
