Day 1 - Arrive and explore Montreux
Arriving in Montreux in December is like stepping into a winter fairy tale. Nestled between the snow-dusted Alps and the calm, reflective waters of Lake Geneva, the town exudes a magical charm during the festive season. The town itself is vibrant, with plenty of cafés and shops, and festive decorations lining the streets. Stroll along the palm-lined lake promenade and enjoy the view of the water and the surrounding mountains.
In the late afternoon, as daylight fades, the heart of Montreux begins to glow with festive lights. This is the perfect time to head to the Montreux Noël Christmas Market, one of the most famous in Switzerland. Located along the lakeshore, the market transforms into a wonderland of wooden chalets selling handcrafted gifts, Christmas decorations, and delicious seasonal treats. The scent of mulled wine, roasted chestnuts and sizzling sausages fills the air. Look up - you'll see Santa Claus flying across the sky in his sleigh ... a magical touch that delights visitors of all ages.
Day 2 - A full day of festive delights
How will you spend your day? There are plenty of day trips which you could take from Montreux - here are a few suggestions within easy reach:
1. Take a cogwheel train ride up to Les Rochers-De-Naye - at 2,042m altitude you should see plenty of lovely snow! On a clear day you have outstanding views of the lake and the Alps and there are mountain restaurants where you can enjoy a drink or lunch. You'll also find Santa’s House where children can meet the man himself (must be pre-booked). | FREE travel with your Montreux Riviera Pass to Haut-de-Caux; 28 Sfr return to the summit
2. Hop on the bus or train to visit Vevey, Montreux's quieter neighbour which also boasts its own Christmas events. Head to the market square for plenty of festive shopping, ice skating and a restaurant in the Christmas Village where you can indulge in a traditional fondue. | FREE travel with your Montreux Riviera Pass
3. A quick train ride brings you to the charming lakeside town of Morges. Stroll along the promenade and visit the historic Château de Morges, home to its own charming Christmas Market with artisan chalets set around the gardens and castle cellars. | Travel 18 Sfr return with your Half Fare Card
After your day out, Montreux's evening attractions await - maybe a meal in one of the huge choice of restaurants followed by a turn on the ferris wheel and more shopping in the Christmas Market.
Day 3 - Make the most of the last day
If you have a afternoon flight home, you can make the most of the morning with a lakeside stroll or a delicious brunch. If you have time, there's medieval Chillon Castle for a step back in time, or we can also recommend Queen - The Studio Experience based in the studios where the band recorded 6 albums.
