Day 1 - Arrive and explore Basel festive shopping
On arrival, you will see that the city has been
transformed into one of the most beautiful and atmospheric Christmas markets in
Europe. Your festive journey begins at Barfüsserplatz, in the heart of Basel,
set in front of the Barfüsserkirche – a former 13th century church that now
houses the Basel Historical Museum. The square is filled with charming wooden
chalets offering handmade gifts, warming drinks, and delicious regional
specialties, all set against a wonderfully festive backdrop.
If the night is still young, continue to a second
Christmas market just a few minutes’ walk away towards the Rhine. Here you will
arrive at Münsterplatz, where the market is set in front of Basel’s historic
cathedral in one of the city’s most beautiful squares. Magnificently decorated
for Christmas and illuminated by atmospheric lights, this will bring the magic
to Christmas.
Day 2 - Take time to explore the region
Basel is a wonderful hub from which to explore further
afield. Known as the 'border triangle', where Switzerland meets France and
Germany, the city was an important trading centre in medieval times. Spend time
discovering Basel itself, or join a guided tour of the Old Town, with its
winding lanes and beautifully preserved buildings that now house stylish
boutiques and inviting restaurants.
Venture further afield with a train journey to Lucerne,
which can be reached in just under an hour and a half. As well as the famous
Chapel Bridge, this charming lakeside resort offers a wealth of culture,
history, and Old Town character. Stroll through the city to admire richly
decorated buildings and picturesque squares, and enjoy its excellent selection
of shops, bars, and restaurants set against a stunning lakeside backdrop. Back
to Basel in the early evening, consider taking a riverboat cruise along the
Rhine, where you can soak up the winter atmosphere and enjoy a traditional
Swiss fondue while admiring the illuminated sights of Basel.
Explore some of Basel’s magical courtyards, transformed
during the festive season into peaceful havens filled with the scent of
cinnamon and mulled wine. Some host cosy restaurants, while others become
fairytale gardens telling enchanting stories. Be sure to look out for Hotel
Steinenschanze, where you will discover a charming fairytale forest hidden
within its courtyard.
NB Ask us about adding a Half Fare Card if you are planning to travel outside Basel
Day 3 - Make the most of the last day
Depending on the
time of your return flight, you may still have the chance to shop for those
special gifts. Head to the Johann Wanner Christmas House - its window display
alone is a delight at this time of year. Peer inside to discover a magical
oasis of all things Christmassy. Popular with celebrities, the shop is renowned
for its hand-blown and hand-painted Christmas decorations.Â
A short walk
further brings you to the Pfalz (Palatine), a stunning terrace overlooking the
Rhine and the Old Town - a perfect photo opportunity. This area offers plenty
of eateries to choose from, making it the perfect place to enjoy lunch before
heading to the airport.
