Holidays In Geneva

An elegant city on the shore of Switzerland's biggest lake

This delightful city is situated at the end of Lake Geneva with the Rhone running through it and visitors can enjoy relaxing cruises on both the lake and the river. Geneva has been well preserved over the centuries. The city will charm you with its opulent mansions and its harbour with the landmark 'Jet d'Eau', a towering spray of water over the lake. The Old Town boasts art galleries, antique shops and an array of small restaurants. The picturesque square, Place du Bourge de Four, is the historical heart of the city. At the highest point of the Old Town is the 12th century St Peter's Cathedral; you can climb to the top to get stunning views of the city and lake.

Geneva was at the heart of the Reformation in the 16th century and there is a fascinating museum which recounts how Calvin set out to turn the city into a model for the new Protestant religion. Geneva is also known for its international institutions including the United Nations. An amazing work of art, the ‘Broken Chair’, measures 12m high and symbolises the UN campaign against landmines. The Patek Philippe Museum is also worth visiting, with a collection of watches and enamel miniatures from the 16th-19th centuries. Hotel guests benefit from the FREE Geneva Transport Card, allowing you to hop on and off local buses, trains and taxi boats.

What to see and do

The world famous CERN scientific centre offers fascinating 2 hour guided tours. Please note that these must be pre-booked and do not include the underground collider. More traditional excursions are available such as Hermance on the shores of Lake Geneva - one of the most picturesque villages of the region with preserved architecture and a beautiful church. Relaxing lake cruises are a must do while you are here and the scenery is magnificent. You could even cruise to the French side of the lake and discover the medieval town of Yvoire with its flower-filled lanes. There are cruises on the River Rhône as well, allowing you to enjoy the unspoilt nature of its riverbanks. Geneva's local mountain - Mont Salève - is a paradise for walkers and is easily accessible by cable car. Well worth a visit is the Musée Olympique in nearby Lausanne.
