From Interlaken the journey with the GoldenPass Express takes you across the Simmen Valley to Zweisimmen and into the mountains to reach the resort of Gstaad, before continuing towards the magnificent vineyards on the shores of Lake Geneva.

Details of the GoldenPass Express route
Interlaken > Spiez > Zweisimmen > Gstaad > Montreux
The route takes you from Interlaken and Lake Thun to Lake Geneva, via some beautiful countryside and stunning mountain scenery. The train timetables are co-ordinated with the Luzern-Interlaken Express should you wish to connect with Lucerne.
This lively town is the gateway to the Bernese Oberland and the stunning Jungfrau mountains are within easy reach for unforgettable day trips. You can spy them from the Höhematte Park in the centre of the town.
Interlaken sits between two lakes and you will be able to enjoy the second - Lake Thun - as you depart the town. There are views of Beatenberg and the pyramid shaped Mount Niesen as you go. The train calls at Spiez, a delightful lakeside town with a castle and hillside vineyards.
From here the railway line heads inland into the mountains and Wimmis Castle, where - in its elevated position - the 10th century Church of St Martin comes into view. Having come through the narrow gorge, the journey continues through the Simmen Valley, home of the Simmental cows. Breeding the Simmental herds brought great wealth, a fact reflected by the splendid farmhouses.
From Zweisimmen, the train climbs to its highest point at Saanenmöser and on towards the chic mountain resort of Gstaad. You'll cross an impressive iron viaduct which offers a good view and as you reach the resort's station, you'll enjoy views of beautifully adorned wooden chalets.
Saanen is the last German speaking village before you pass into the French speaking region of Switzerland. Saanen and Chateau-d'Oex are famous for their delicious cheeses, while the latter has also become a popular centre for hot air ballooning.
The train makes its way through a narrow valley and the long Jaman Tunnel. At Les Avants, you'll enjoy scenic woodlands and meadows filled with white narcissi during the spring. The steep, winding descent towards Montreux offers spectacular views of Lake Geneva, one of the major highlights of the whole trip.
The journey ends in the centre of Montreux, an elegant resort on the shore of Lake Geneva. This is a popular place to enjoy the lake cruises, the fine wine produced in the local World Heritage vineyards and trips to mountain beauty spots such as Les Rochers-de-Naye.
