Highlights

Centovalli region to the Italian border

The train leaves Locarno from an underground station and rises to the start of some lovely scenery. Soon you have left the bustle of the resort behind and entered the lush region known as the Hundred Valleys.

The train calls at 12 little towns and villages - you could alight at any and take a walk along the 160km of prepared trails in the very pretty countryside, or simply stop for a delicious lunch in an authentic grotto.

Vigezzo Valley

You'll cross the border into Italy and experience the beautiful natural scenery of the Vigezzo Valley, known for its rugged, more mountainous landscape. The valley is also an access point to Val Grande National Park, an ideal destination for hikers. The train calls at another dozen villages which you can explore. Try Santa Maria Maggiore for historical charm, great food and frescos of the Rossetti Valentini School of Fine Arts.

Domodossola

The little train travels into the Val d'Ossola, with more scenic view to enjoy and terminates in Domodossola. The town has a restored historical centre including the Piazza Mercato with its 15th century arcades and impressive merchant houses. Visit on a Saturday for the renowned weekly market and enjoy a look around before your return journey.

Directions

You can join the Centovalli Line at Locarno.  There are good connections to Locarno from Ascona and Bellinzona.
