On this magical round trip from Meiringen, the comfortable PostBus takes you over the Grimsel, Nufenen, Gotthard and Susten passes. There are fabulous views over the imposing Rhone glacier and the surrounding countryside, with plenty of opportunities to stretch your legs and admire the stunning scenery along the way.
Grimsel Pass (2,164m)
Leaving Meiringen, the PostBus travels through the picturesque Haslital Valley, following the river Aare. The road to the Grimsel Pass takes you past sparkling reservoir lakes and when you reach the Pass itself after an hour, you will have the opportunity to walk around and enjoy the magnificent views.
Nufenen Pass (2,478m)
After Grimsel the PostBus heads further south on the winding roads to Nufenen. The road across the Pass is the highest in the Swiss Alps, and the bus will stop here for you to enjoy the fantastic views of the mountain panorama.
Lunch in Airolo
After Nufenen, there's a short journey to Airolo. This picturesque village in the Ticino is the perfect spot for a light lunch.
Gotthard Pass (2,108m)
Back on the bus and the spectacular winding road brings you to the 'King of Mountain Passes' at Gotthard. This strategic spot has been a north-south transalpine crossing point since Roman times. You will have time here to visit the historic Gotthard fortress. Heading north from Gotthard you will encounter the Devil's Bridge across the Schöllenen Gorge.
Susten Pass (2,224m)
On the way to the final pass on this splendid journey, the Postbus crosses no less than 25 bridges and passes through 25 tunnels. You will also have the opportunity to visit the famous Stone Glacier during your stop on the pass. From Susten it is then a 50 minute journey down into the Bernese Oberland and back to Meiringen.
The Central Alps Passes route runs daily from late June to mid October.
This is an 8 hour 45 minute round trip which starts from the centre of Meiringen. The PostBus departs at around 9.30, so it is also possible to travel from Interlaken (40 minutes) in time to join the trip.
