The Lötschberg Regio Express travels through the Swiss heartland. It connects with several other classic scenic rail routes such as the GoldenPass Express to Montreux, the Glacier Express to St. Moritz and the Graubünden mountain resorts and the Centovalli Line to Locarno, as well as connections to Zermatt - any of which would make for an unforgettable multi centre holiday.
The new Lötschberg base tunnel, which was opened in 2007, has cut journey times between the Valais and Bernese Oberland regions - however you miss a lot by being in the new longer tunnel. We recommend the original 100 year old route which has great attractions - the impressive view of the Rhone Valley, the attractive village of Kandersteg which is revealed after leaving the old tunnel and the descent with incredible loops around the remains of the Tellenburg tower and the imposing Kander Viaduct. The route then travels on towards Lake Thun in the Bernese Oberland, where you can alight in the popular lakeside resort of Spiez or the wonderful old town of Thun a little further round the lake. The line carries on through the Swiss countryside to its final stop, the very charming capital city of Bern.
