GoldenPass Line and Luzern-Interlaken Express

This attractive itinerary, rich in tradition, takes you from Central Switzerland to Lake Geneva. You pass through the historic sites of the Lucerne region travelling onboard the Luzern-Interlaken Express panoramic train, crossing the Brünig Pass and alongside Lake Brienz to Interlaken.

From Interlaken the journey continues with the GoldenPass Line across the Simmen Valley to Zweisimmen. There is a change of trains here for the journey into the mountains to reach the celebrated resort of Gstaad before continuing towards the magnificent vineyards on the shores of Lake Geneva.

Details of the route

The route takes you from Lake Lucerne to Lake Geneva, via some beautiful countryside and 3 stunning mountain passes.

Jesuit Church, Lucerne A charming and historic town on the shore of Lake Lucerne. This is a favourite resort for lakes and mountains views as well as getting out and about to visit those mountains for scenic walks and lunches. You can also connect with the Gotthard Panorama Express from Lucerne.
Meiringen The train climbs 566m and crosses the scenic Brünig Pass. The section from Giswil requires the train to engage its cog rail system to overcome a gradient four times steeper than the famous Gotthard line. The journey continues to Meiringen, starting point for visits to the region's gorges and mountain lakes as well as a strong association with Sherlock Holmes.
Luzern-Interlaken Express From Meiringen, you'll travel through the Hasli Valley then the train runs alongside picturesque Lake Brienz before arriving into Interlaken. This lively town is the gateway to the Bernese Oberland. If you are staying here, the stunning Jungfrau mountains are within easy reach for unforgettable day trips.
Spiez chapel Interlaken sits between two lakes and you will be able to enjoy the second - Lake Thun - as you depart the town. There are views of Beatenberg and the pyramid shaped Mount Niesen as you go. The train calls at Spiez, a delightful lakeside town with a castle and hillside vineyards.
Simmental region From here the railway line heads inland into the mountains and Wimmis Castle, where - in its elevated position - the 10th century Church of St Martin comes into view. Having come through the narrow gorge, the journey continues through the Simmen Valley, home of the Simmental cows. Breeding the Simmental herds brought great wealth, a fact reflected by the splendid farmhouses.
Gstaad village From Zweisimmen, the train climbs to its highest point at Saanenmöser and on towards the chic mountain resort of Gstaad. You'll cross an impressive iron viaduct which offers a good view and as you reach the resort's station, you'll enjoy views of beautifully adorned wooden chalets.
Saanen on the route of the GoldenPass Line Saanen is the last German speaking village before you pass into the French speaking region of Switzerland. Saanen and Chateau-d'Oex are famous for their delicious cheeses, while the latter has also become a popular centre for hot air ballooning.
Spring views in the Les Avants region The train makes its way through a narrow valley and the long Jaman Tunnel. At Les Avants, you'll enjoy scenic woodlands and meadows filled with white narcissi during the spring. The steep, winding descent towards Montreux offers spectacular views of Lake Geneva, one of the major highlights of the whole trip.
Montreux lakeside The journey ends in the centre of Montreux, an elegant resort on the shore of Lake Geneva. This is a popular place to enjoy the lake cruises, the fine wine produced in the local World Heritage vineyards and trips to mountain beauty spots such as Les Rochers-de-Naye.
