This quieter mountain is something of an insider's tip which we can highly recommend. There are plenty of gentle walks and splendid views to be had over the valley and up to the high Alps. Some idyllic alpine villages are waiting to be discovered.
Journey to the mountain
The 6 person gondola cable car departs regularly from Glaris valley station and transports you to the summit in just a few minutes. The views during the journey and upon arrival at 2,053m are splendid.
There is the Jatzmeder mountain restaurant close to the cable car station where you can enjoy a light meal or just a refreshing drink.
A delightful way to eat on the mountain in at one of the barbecue spots. Try the gentle walk along the trail to Äbirügg which takes around half an hour. Here you can enjoy a meal in beautiful natural surroundings. Firewood is provided.
There are several peaceful walking possibilities on the Rinerhorn. You could take a meandering walk back down to Glaris, or go across the mountain, via Waldalp at 1,830m and down to Frauenkirch.
A longer walk but with glorious views takes you in the other direction, across to Monstein, which is an idyllic Graubünden village with an alpine brewery. When you are ready, the bus will bring you back to Davos.
Alpine petting zoo and playground
At the top station on the Rinerhorn you will find a petting zoo with animals including pigs, chickens, goats and alpacas. The zoo is open until the end of September.
There is also a large children's playground beside the restaurant. Two large sandpits, a bouncy castle, zipline, trampoline and climbing frame will delight children.
Free entry to both.
The Rinerhorn cable car departs from Glaris, which is just along the valley from Davos.
You can take the train from Davos Platz and there are also easy connections from Klosters. This is the nearest of the mountains to Wiesen, with a short train or bus ride to Glaris.
