The town of Lugano enjoys a spectacular position beside the lake of the same name, with mountains standing guard at either end of the sweeping bay. Lugano is a bustling financial centre but the historic heart of the town is traffic free and features Mediterranean style squares and porticoes. In the Museo Cantonale d'Arte are paintings by Klee, Renoir and Degas. The 16th century Cathedral of San Lorenzo has a beautiful white stone and marble façade and the church of Santa Maria degli Angioli boasts a celebrated Renaissance fresco dating from 1529. Don't miss the new Lugano Arte e Cultura complex - an architectural gem offering a fantastic programme of music, dance and exhibitions.
More earthly delights can be found at the chocolate museum. Here, you can learn about the history, watch chocolate being made and of course enjoy a sample tasting. Indeed, gastronomy plays a big part in the life of the town. Visitors can enjoy an al fresco meal on the main Piazza della Riforma in the shade of the 19th century Town Hall, or try a traditional grotto serving the local wine and chestnut delicacies.
There are plenty of opportunities for relaxing here, whether it is browsing through the boutiques in the cobblestone streets, enjoying a drink in the many bars and cafés or taking an evening stroll along the lakeside promenade. Thanks to the balmy climate, the numerous parks display a multitude of colourful sub-tropical plants and in spring, the camellias and magnolias make for a beautiful sight. The Villa Ciani in the main park has breathtaking views over the lake. The Villa hosts regular art exhibitions and the splendid grounds boast statues, decorative fountains, and lush flowerbeds.
Visitors should make time to enjoy the views of the region from the nearby mountains. There are local funiculars that travel up to beauty spots on Monte Brè and Monte San Salvatore; both offer stunning views of the lake and the Swiss Alps. On the lake itself, steamer cruises to picturesque lakeside villages such as Gandria and Morcote are highly recommended.

TWO AND MULTI CENTRE HOLIDAYS
Why not consider a multi centre holiday, combining one of the balmy Ticino resorts with a stay in picturesque Weggis or Lucerne. The journey itself will be a highlight of your holiday, including rail carriages with panoramic windows and the nostalgic Gotthard Panorama Express on Lake Lucerne. Or travel on the dramatic Bernina Express to compare the lakeside delights of the Lake Maggiore and Lake Lugano resorts with a decidedly alpine destination such as St. Moritz and Davos.
