Monte Tamaro has a fabulous choice of activities for a full day out. You can try an adrenaline thrill ride on a toboggan run or spend the day in the water park. You may like to simply take the cable car up from Rivera to Alpe Foppa at 1,530m for lunch and beautiful views of the Swiss and Italian mountains and lakes.

Highlights

Views from Alpe Foppa

The cable car takes you to Alpe Foppa at 1,530m and a wonderful panorama awaits. From here you can see the sparkling lakes that divide Switzerland from Italy, the pre-alpine hills and the higher alpine summits covered with snow.

Walks on Monte Tamaro

There are 90km of splendid walking trails to explore here, from gentle walks to more challenging hikes. You can hike up to the top of Monte Tamaro at 1,961m, or back down to the village of Rivera. 

You can even try the five hour Traversata hike, which leads along the mountain ridge of the Swiss-Italian border to Monte Lema. From here you can take the cable car and bus back to Lugano.

Refreshments

The Alpe Foppa restaurant seats 400 people and offers typical Ticino dishes such as polenta with two different kinds of cheese, home-made meat or vegetarian lasagne. There is a large sun terrace so you can enjoy your meal with a glorious view. Other facilities include a snack bar, shop and a large childrenâ??s play area.

Art on the mountain

The Santa Maria degli Angeli chapel is a marvel of contemporary architecture, designed by architect Mario Botta. Built on a spur of the mountain it has an innovative design, features paintings by Enzo Cucchi and opens out onto an amazing panorama. There are other notable works of art at Alpe Foppa including the 'Suspended Cube' sculpture, the 'Temple Guardian' monolithic statue and the 'Our Lady of Tamaro' bronze statue.

Adventure park

The Tamaro adventure park offers a range of thrilling activities. You can try the breathtaking 800m downhill ride on the two man summer bobsleigh track - travlling at up to 50km/h. There is also a zip line, base jumping and treetop trails of varying difficulties for children and adults. Payable locally.

Splash and Spa

Open all year at the foot of Monte Tamaro, this water park complex offers something for everyone. There is an indoor wave pool, an in-pool bar, children's area, plenty of slides, an outdoor pool and a terrace and gardens for relaxing. The huge spa boasts a range of themed saunas and steam rooms, relaxation rooms, aromatic showers and even a unique snowroom! You will not go hungry, with a choice of restaurants and bars during your time here. Payable locally - discount with your Ticino Ticket.


Directions

There are regular trains from Lugano to Rivera-Bironico, which takes about half an hour. The cable car is just 300m from the Rivera railway station with departures up the mountain all day. 

From Locarno, you can reach Rivera by changing trains at Giubiasco - a journey time of around an hour.
