Visitors have been coming to Locarno since Roman times, but it was in the Belle Epoque era that this enchanting town gained its reputation as a delightful and lively holiday destination. Situated by Lake Maggiore and enjoying the balmy sunshine normally associated with its Italian neighbour, this really is an ideal place to relax and enjoy the dolce vita.
As well as the sparkling lake, visitors are treated to beautiful views of foothills of the southern Alps. The famous Piazza Grande offers boutique shops and the opportunity to get involved in the inviting Mediterranean-style café culture. During the Locarno International Film Festival (which has been held here since 1948), the Piazza is transformed into a huge open air cinema.
Families will enjoy the Lido, with its splash pools, waterslides and spectacular views over the lake. The botanical gardens abound with banana trees and palm trees, making for a wonderful place to stroll and enjoy the sunshine. Every spring, the stunning Parco delle Camelie features an arresting display of colourful and fragrant camellias.
Historic must-sees include the 15th century Castello Visconteo with its Renaissance-style courtyard and exhibitions of Roman artefacts. Try taking the1905 funicular up to rocky Orselina, home to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso. The Virgin Mary appeared to a monk here in 1480 and it has been an important pilgrimage site ever since. From Orselina, it is also possible to take the cable car to Cardada in the mountains, then ever upwards by chair lift to Cimetta. The views and alpine walking trails are well worth the trip.

TWO AND MULTI CENTRE HOLIDAYS
Why not consider a multi centre holiday, combining one of the balmy Ticino resorts with a stay in picturesque Weggis or Lucerne. The journey itself will be a highlight of your holiday, including rail carriages with panoramic windows and the nostalgic Gotthard Panorama Express on Lake Lucerne. Or travel on the dramatic Bernina Express to compare the lakeside delights of the Lake Maggiore and Lake Lugano resorts with a decidedly alpine destination such as St. Moritz and Davos.
