Holidays in Appenzell - Switzerland Charming historic town surrounded by stunning alpine scenery

Appenzell is a delightful small town whose beautiful pedestrianised old centre has many buildings which are ornately decorated with frescoes and date back to the 16th century. The unique Hauptgrasse is the main street with quaint colourful houses; Landsgemeindeplatz, the historic town square, is surrounded by narrow streets - this a wonderful area to enjoy and relax in one of the many restaurants and cafés. The town boasts many historic buildings from the 16th century including the Town Hall and the parish church of St. Mauritius as well as several interesting museums. The rolling countryside around Appenzell changes from hilly landscape to the rock-dominated Alpstein region where mighty sheer rock formations tower to over 2,500m. Guests staying 3 nights or more receive the Appenzell Card offering free local travel by buses and 2nd class rail as well as free travel on the cable cars Wasserauen-Ebenalp, Jakobsbad- Kronberg and the Hoher Kasten revolving restaurant and cable car.

Wasserauen and the Ebenalp

Just a local rail journey from Appenzell is cable car Wasserauen and the Ebenalp (1,644m) – the gateway to the hiking region of the Alpstein. The 'Wildkirchli' cave chapel, which appears to claw dramatically to the rock, can be reached on foot in only 15 minutes by walking through an initially gentle landscape and two caverns. But the position of the Aescher hostelry, captured a thousand times on postcards, is even more spectacular.

Brülisau-Hoher cable car

The Brülisau-Hoher Kasten cable car and revolving restaurant is reached by local rail and bus in 13 minutes from Appenzell. On top of the mountain you can enjoy a fantastic 360° outlook. The Europa-Rundweg circular trail goes right around the Panoramic Restaurant, which itself only opened a few years ago, and offers view over six counties. Viewing terraces, benches, an impressive rock path and telescopes encourage you to rest a while and enjoy the scenery.

Another local train to Jakobsbad-Kronberg (1663m) cableway, and the cosy Berggasthaus awaits you on the summit, with fine cuisine, fabulous views of the Alpstein and spectacular scenery of the distant alpine and mountain regions. A sun terrace invites you to relax before considering the delightful summit walk and the ridge hike past St. James's chapel to the Scheidegg mountain guesthouse – as well as the less strenuous flower-rich trail down to the Schwägalp. There is also an Alpine coaster bob sleigh and rope park.
