Holidays in Solothurn - Switzerland
The Baroque town surrounded by stunning natural scenery
Solothurn is renowned as one of Switzerland's most beautiful Baroque towns. The Old Town, which nestles on the river Aare, was the residence of the French ambassador during the 16th-18th centuries and some truly magnificent buildings were erected during this period. The Old Town boasts 11 fountains and 11 churches, the most impressive of which is the 66m high St. Ursus Cathedral - well worth a visit for its Pisoni façade and wonderful interior stuccos. The Old Town is traffic-free and a pleasure to wander around, enjoying the riverside eateries and bars. River cruises are always popular in the summer months. Museums of note include the Fine Art Museum and the Old Arsenal, home to Europe's largest collection of armour and weapons. This is a great town in which to stay for a couple of days, perhaps combining with a longer holiday in the Bernese Oberland.
Just outside the town of Solothurn lies the idyllic Verena Gorge, which can be reached by bus, or a pleasant half hour walk. Visitors will find themselves on a wooded path beside the forest stream, which leads to a preserved hermitage cottage and gardens. Here you can also see the Baroque Verena and Saint Martin chapels and the Magdalene and Mount of Olives grottos. A wonderfully tranquil spot, perfect for finding a moment of serenity. A restaurant is located close to the cottage and gardens.
Weissenstein is Solothurn's local mountain, standing at 1280m above sea level. There are PostBuses running up to the peak on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays during the summer months. Step off the bus and the panoramic views over the Jura mountain landscape are just stunning. It is even possible to see as far as Mont Blanc on a clear day. There are a number of hiking paths to enjoy, with various degrees of difficulty. After your walk, there are 3 restaurants in which to relax over a traditional meal.
Thal Nature Park
The Thal Nature Park is located in the Jura mountains, between the Weissenstein and Wasserfallen peaks. This verdant area of oustanding natural beauty has a number of walking and hiking trails for all abilities which allow you to experience the region's gorges and sunlit pastures, its mountain chamois and deer and the rich variety of mountain flora. Cycling and horse riding are also popular ways to enjoy the beautiful scenery. There are several mountain restaurants, mostly serving traditional local food from the Thal farms.
