The surrounding lakes - Härzlisee, Trübsee, Engstlensee, Tannensee and Melchsee offer beautiful scenery as well as rafting, fishing or simply relaxing under the 'big sky' in a rowing boat.
Benedictine monks gave Engelberg (Mountain of Angels) its name in the 12th century. Today, you can visit their famous monastery at the heart of Engelberg - founded in 1120 and rebuilt in 1740. It is still a working monastery and interesting guided tours are available so you can experience the incredible calming atmosphere of this unique place for yourself. Not to be missed is the rotating cable car to scenic Mount Titlis, with its year round blanket of snow. The historic town of Lucerne also makes for popular excursion from Engelberg, with its lake cruises, museums and famous Lion Monument just an hour away by train.
