This most attractive region is very popular with walkers as there are more than 170km of marked trails and the views of the mountains and gorges are stunning. Families are particularly welcome to enjoy the fresh air, mountain streams and the swimming and watersports available on Lake Heid. Visits from LENZERHEIDE
A fun day out in the mountains! A 4-seater chairlift takes you from Churwalden to Pradaschier at 1,740m above sea level. There is a spectacular toboggan run, which at 3.1km is the longest in Switzerland, as well as a rope park and zip line for the adventurous. The cosy mountain restaurant is perfect for lunch, or you may prefer to explore one of the walking trails and make use of the barbecue spots along the way.
This ultra modern cable car has been built to link the ski areas of Arosa and Lenzerheide. However, it is also open mid July-mid August, so summer visitors can use a connecting series of chair lifts and cable cars for a wonderful day out, ascending one side of the mighty mountains and descending the other in order to visit Arosa.
Why not head back down the mountain on the PostBus for lunch in Switzerland's oldest town. There is plenty of history to take in as you wander through the narrow streets and pretty squares of Chur, including an 800 year old cathedral. There are plenty of good restaurants and you will find this to be a very pleasant day out.
A 30 minute bus ride brings you from Lenzerheide to Tiefencastel. Board the regional train here and enjoy the route of the UNESCO World Heritage Line through spectacular alpine landscapes and over marvellous bridges and viaducts en route to St. Moritz, where you can shop and enjoy lunch. A slightly longer bus journey would bring you to Filisur where you can join the famous Bernina Express train - it follows the same route, with the added advantage of huge panoramic windows so you can immerse yourself in the scenery. Reservation recommended.
