Day 1. Arrive and explore Interlaken
Flight from the UK to Zurich airport with rail travel to Interlaken. Check in to your hotel for your 3 night stay and enjoy your first look around Interlaken.
Days 2-3. Interlaken and the Bernese Oberland
With your Swiss Travel Pass, Interlaken is the perfect spot from which to enjoy FREE travel around the classic Swiss scenery of the Bernese Oberland. The lakes of Brienz and Thun both have wonderful cruises to idyllic lakeside villages. Take a trip to Harder Kulm with its stunning views over Interlaken. Other trips further afield: Bern, Lucerne or Zermatt! On most scenic mountain railways you get a 50% reduction including Schynige Platte or the Brienzer Rothorn steam train, a real treat for any train enthusiast, as well as many other wonderful excursions in this beautiful region. 3 nights is not enough!
Day 4. Travel to Brig on the Lötschberg Regio Express
A lovely journey today – take a cruise on the lake to Thun, with lunch served on board (payable locally). From Thun you can travel by rail through the tunnel or take the slower Lötschberg Regio Express: the older, looping route through Kandersteg with fantastic views over the countryside. Arrive into Brig, your base for the next 2 nights.
Day 5. Brig and the Valais region
Brig is closely linked to the Simplon Pass and thus is full of history relating to this traditional trading route. The Old Town has charming alleyways, historic merchants’ houses and the impressive baroque Stockalper’s Castle. Use your Swiss Travel Pass to visit the region - recommendations include Belalp for views of the UNESCO protected Aletsch Glacier and travelling to Rosswald for the stunning sunsets (50% discount on the cable cars). Further afield, you can visit Zermatt and its Matterhorn views.
Day 6. Travel to Locarno on the Centovalli Line
Travel through the Simplon Tunnel into Italy and change at Domodossola onto the Centovalli Line. This delightful route meanders alongside wild canyons, dreamy villages and lush vineyards. Crossing back into Switzerland, Locarno awaits you on the shore of Lake Maggiore for a 2 night stay.
Days 7. Experience Italian Switzerland: culture, language and an abundance of restaurants
Gorgeous scenery is never far away from Locarno and with your Swiss Travel Pass you can explore the whole Ticino region and receive a reduction on cable cars and funiculars. The interesting town of Bellinzona is well worth a visit, with three medieval castles demonstrating the historical importance of the town.
Day 8. Bernina Express to Pontresina
Time to travel on the Bernina Express. Start with an hour’s journey to Lugano, where you join the distinctive red Bernina Express Bus that makes its way around the northern part of Lake Como en route for Tirano. Here you’ll pick up the panoramic train to Pontresina and enjoy spectacular views as you cross the Alps. Highlights of the journey include mountain streams, gorges and viaducts - and the stunningly dramatic Bernina Pass at over 2,223m. After two memorable hours on the train, you’ll arrive in Pontresina for a 3 night stay.
Days 9-10. Pontresina and the Upper Engadin region
Your visit to Pontresina is greatly enhanced by the Engadin Card with FREE transport including mountain railways, buses and cable cars. This gives you unlimited access to wonderful walks and excursions, including the excellent panoramic walk at Alp Languard with views over the Bernina massif. Other recommendations include the funicular to Corviglia, connecting to the cable car to Piz Nair at 3,057m and the glacier station of Diavolezza, where you can enjoy lunch while admiring the unforgettable mountain scenery.
Day 11. Last day
Time for a last look around Pontresina before you take the train to Zurich airport for youf flight to the UK.
