Day 1. Arrive and explore
Flight from the UK to Zurich airport with rail travel to Brig.
Check in to your hotel for your 2 night stay and enjoy Brig - gateway to the high Alps.
Day 2. Brig and the Valais region
Brig is closely linked to the Simplon Pass and thus is full of history relating to this traditional trading route. The Old Town has charming alleyways, historic merchants' houses and the impressive baroque Stockalper's Castle, which is well worth a visit. The town is a wonderful base from which to visit this fascinating area - recommendations include the Belalp cable car for views of the Aletsch Glacier, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and travelling to Rosswald for the stunning sunsets. Further afield, you can also visit Zermatt and the Matterhorn for the day, or even take a day trip on the Centovalli Line to Locarno. The Half Fare Card (included in the price of your holiday) allows you to fully explore the region.
Day 3. Glacier Express to Chur
The journey from Brig to Chur takes around 4 hours and you will be served a 3 course lunch at your seat while you travel past the idyllic little villages of the Goms valley. Highlights of this classic route include the highest point of the journey - the Oberalp Pass at 2,044m - and views of the 17th century monastery at Disentis. You will then travel through the dramatic Rhine Gorge, known as the 'Grand Canyon of Switzerland' which certainly makes for a spectacular finale to your journey. Enjoy your first sight of Chur before checking into your hotel for your 2 night stay.
Day 4. Chur and the Graubünden region
Chur is Switzerland’s oldest town and has a delightful centre with old churches and pretty squares. As Chur is situated in the heart of some of the most beautiful scenery in Switzerland, there are some wonderful trips to enjoy such as the Brambrüesch cable car for wonderful walking in alpine meadows, or the Viamala Gorge near Thusis. Both of these can be enjoyed with your Half Fare Card. You could even undertake another classic scenic rail journey on a Bernina Express day trip, experiencing the steep and winding rail tracks through the Alps and down into Tirano for an Italian lunch.
Day 5. Last day
Time for a last look around Chur before you take the train back to Zurich airport for your flight to the UK.
