Bernina Express - Across an ancient landscape to northern Italy
An extraordinary alpine adventure crossing the Alps from north to south
FROM ST. MORITZ AND PONTRESINA TO TIRANO, WITH ONWARD BERNINA BUS TO LUGANO
This scenic journey can be taken as a day trip to Tirano, or enjoyed as part of a multi centre scenic holiday.
The unforgettable Bernina Express journey features two sections. The rail section of the route departs daily and transports you from the towering glaciers of the high Alps to the swaying palms of Italy. Crossing the Alps in style, the train climbs an impressive 2,223m to the Bernina Pass and offers breathtaking vistas as you ride over impressive viaducts and past galleries hewn from the sheer rock. There are beautiful views of rushing mountain streams, glaciers and even an alpine garden en route to the terminus in Tirano, which lies just over the Italian border. The line is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
You can enjoy this fabulous journey as a day trip from St. Moritz and Pontresina (2 hours each way). Alternatively, from April to October, travellers are able to continue along the scenic route on the comfortable Bernina Express Bus. This special bus with its large panoramic windows takes you on a 3 hour journey through picturesque country villages and along the banks of Lake Como's pretty coves and quaint fishing villages before reaching the narrow waterside roads of sparkling Lake Lugano. You'll cross back into Switzerland and arrive into Lugano itself for the next part of your holiday.
It is also possible to enjoy the Bernina journey in the opposite direction if you prefer to visit the sunny southern lakes before heading up to the Alps.
An alternative is a Bernina Express day trip, available from the resorts of Chur, Davos, St. Moritz and Pontresina.
We'll be pleased to create any Bernina Express itinerary to suit you, incorporating your own selection of resorts, duration, hotels and excursions.
We can even help you build a Grand Tour, combining the Bernina Express with other scenic rail routes such as the Glacier Express and Gotthard Panorama Express.
