Highlights

Walking

The Plattjen cable car station lies at 2,750m. The famous viewpoint is close by and from here you can look out over what is known as the Saas panorama. This is a glorious alpine view, which will stay with you forever. You can also see the Mattmark reservoir lake and dam, the largest of its type in Europe.

Walkers may like to follow the scenic trail to Mattmark and then take a gentle stroll on the level path around the lake, with some fabulous views. You can take the PostBus back to Saas-Fee from Mattmark.

You could also follow the trail between Plattjen and Hannig. This will take several hours, but you will be rewarded with fabulous views along the way, and the chance to spot mountain animals such as ibex and chamois. On arrival, you can take the Hannig cable car back to Saas-Fee.

Refreshments

At the Plattjen summit station you can relax with a drink or a hearty lunch at the Terminus mountain restaurant. The sun terrace offers great views and there is a children's playground. The menu has the usual mix of typical Swiss dishes and Valaisian specialities, including delicious sorbet made with the local apricots.

There are plenty of scenic picnic spots to enjoy along the walking trails.

Kneipp Path

Make time for the Kneipp Path which you can find at the valley station at the foot of Plattjen.

In the 19th century, Sebastian Kneipp created a wellness concept based on the healing power of water and natural surroundings. Kneipp Paths are to be found all over Switzerland and feature a number of different natural materials such as pebbles and woodchips which you walk along with bare feet in order to boost circulation. In Plattjen, you will find a footbath, stream and the barefoot trail, plus a relaxation zone.

Directions

You can walk from your Saas-Fee hotel to the cable car station, with regular departures throughout the day.
