Day 1. Arrive and explore the lakeside resort of Ascona
Flight from the UK to Zurich airport with train travel to Locarno and a short taxi transfer to Ascona. Check in to your hotel for your 3 night stay and enjoy your first taste of this welcoming lakeside resort.
Days 2-3. Ascona and the Ticino region
Ascona is a lovely resort in a beautiful setting on the Italian Lake Maggiore. There is an extremely pretty Old Town with a network of narrow passageways and squares, full of interesting shops and restaurants. With your Swiss Travel Pass you can travel on the Centovalli Line and enjoy lunch in the Italian town of Domodossola or stop off at one of the delightful villages and enjoy many walking opportunities in the local mountains. This delightful area also includes the region’s historical capital, Bellinzona, with its fabulous Saturday market and three castles to explore.
Day 4. Gotthard Panorama Express to Weggis
The rail section of the Gotthard Panorama Express departs from nearby Locarno to Weggis - time to enjoy some of the highlights of a spectacular journey through the original Gotthard Tunnel and past the Devil’s Bridge. At Flüelen, you’ll board the vintage paddle steamer or saloon motor vessel for a leisurely cruise along Lake Lucerne. The cruise gently takes you past many beautiful sights such as the historic Rütli meadow en route to Weggis, where you’ll stay for 4 nights.
Days 5-7. Weggis and Central Switzerland
The delightful lakeside resort of Weggis is a peaceful village nestling below Mount Rigi. With your Swiss Travel Pass a visit to this beautiful mountain is a must during your stay here - try taking the cable car from Weggis and onward to Rigi Kulm by train, where you can see all the way to the Black Forest on a clear day. The return is an interesting rail journey via Vitznau, with the lake steamer back to Weggis. The historic town of Lucerne is nearby and has wonderful sightseeing, shopping and restaurants. Other trips further afield: Bern, Interlaken or Lake Constance on the German border!
Day 8. Luzern-Interlaken Express to Wengen
Today starts with a boat trip to Lucerne to join the panoramic train Luzern-Interlaken Express. This particularly scenic route climbs 566m, featuring a section from Giswil where the train needs to engage its cog rail system to overcome a gradient four times steeper than the famous Gotthard line. The journey continues to Meiringen, famous as a starting point for visits into the gorges and mountain lakes of the area, before following the shore of Lake Brienz into Interlaken. Change here for the train to the beautiful mountain resort of Wengen for 4 nights.
Days 9-11. Wengen and the Bernese Oberland region
Wengen is a perennial favourite - an idyllic traffic-free village in the mountains, with picturesque buildings and stunning views from the sunny Wengen plateau. Your Swiss Travel Pass offers up to 50% off a wealth of excursions to enjoy. You are spoilt for choice with Männlichen just a cable car away for lovely walks. Head down the valley to the Lauterbrunnen and the Trümmelbach Falls or cross the mountains to visit Mürren and the Schilthorn mountain with its revolving restaurant. The high Alps are ever present and truly glorious.
Day 12. Last day
Time for a last look around Wengen before you return rail travel to Zurich airport for your flight to the UK.
