Holidays in the Valais - Switzerland Awesome mountains, stunning scenery and traditional alpine villages

The awesome might of Switzerland’s highest mountains and largest glaciers with steep rock faces dropping down into deep wide valleys, make this one of the most spectacular regions. The Glacier Express runs from Zermatt and Brig connects with Chur, St. Moritz and Pontresina in the Graubünden region.

The Valais region is dominated by the majestic high Alps with over 40 peaks over 4,000m and the majestic Matterhorn is the most recognisable with its distinctive shape and dramatic history. The mountains have several attractive villages which in the summer offer relaxing destinations with wonderful excursions to the mountain peaks and glaciers with stunning walks which will appeal to all levels of walkers.
The Rhone River flows down the Goms valley with its mountain villages and ancient towns into the wide Rhone valley which discharges into Lake Geneva. These ancient trade routes have established many interesting towns like Brig which today offer a wide range of wonderful excursions.

Choosing your resort

Zermatt
This great car-free resort is high in up in the Matter Valley, nestling amongst stunning scenery of mountains and glaciers and offers visitors a fantastic panorama of 38 four-thousand-metre peaks. The dominant mountain is the awe-inspiring Matterhorn which, with its distinctive shape, has become a symbol of Zermatt. This traditional high alpine village has retained its style with its rustic stüblis, bars and over 100 restaurants. Zermatt is a superb summer destination with its ‘must visits’ of the Gornergrat mountain railway, Rothorn cable car and the underground Sunnegga Express funicular.

Saas-Fee
Lying in one of the most beautiful high valleys in Switzerland, the traffic-free picturesque glacier village of Saas-Fee has retained its old character with an abundance of charm. Your holiday needs are well catered for with a variety of shops, attractive bars, restaurants and narrow cobbled streets surrounded by spectacular scenery including the ‘Dom’, Switzerland’s highest mountain. The Metro Alpin, the world’s highest underground train, takes you up to the world’s highest revolving restaurant at 3,500m and along with cable cars and gondola cableways offers you some of the finest views and the clearest air you can breathe. Welcome to the pearl of the Alps!

Brig
This charming town occupies a unique position at the junction of the Simplon road where the Rhone valley crosses from Lake Geneva up to the Furka Pass. The lovely Old Town with its stately houses, cosy inns and good local shopping, also boasts the Stockalper Castle, one of the most important baroque palaces in Switzerland.

The history of  Brig is closely linked with the Simplon Pass, one of the most beautiful passes which starts immediately beyond the city gates. Napoleon built a road through the Simplon Pass in the 19th century to move his armies, thus creating the first man-made road in the Alps.

A must among them is the Allalin, which boasts three world records - the highest underground funicular, the highest revolving restaurant and the largest ice grotto. Or why not take the whole family to feed the tame marmots around the Spielboden mountain station? Also well worth a visit are Lake Kreuzboden - set amid beautiful, rugged mountain scenery - and the lovely panoramic terrace on Hannig mountain, also known as "Sonnenberg" or sunny mountain.
