Ascona is a quintessential lakeside resort, featuring pretty pastel coloured houses clustered around a tranquil harbour. The balmy climate allows for leisurely strolls along the boardwalk promenade, taking in the stunning lake and mountain views. The old town (Borgo) has at its heart the 16th century church of San Pietro e Paolo, the tall bell tower being the town’s central landmark. Branching out from the church is a series of narrow lanes with boutiques, antiques shops and galleries.
Art is well celebrated in this cultural town and one of the highlights is the modern art museum. This is housed in a beautiful 16th century building and features works by artists associated with Ascona, including key Expressionist painters Paul Klee and Alexej von Jawlensky. Indeed, at the beginning of the 20th century, Klee was among a group of notables including Carl Jung and Isadora Duncan who settled a colony in Ascona intending to create a cultural and spiritual utopia.
Musical culture also thrives here, with the international Jazz Festival taking place every summer and the prestigious classical music festival Settimane Musicali di Ascona in autumn. Gastronomy is also one of the main attractions of the town, whether you are tempted by a hearty risotto served in the traditional grottos (taverns) or fine dining at a Michelin-starred restaurant.
Ascona is surrounded by some of the most beautiful natural sights in Switzerland. Try taking a boat trip to the magnificent Botanical Gardens on the Brissago Islands, where 1500 species of subtropical plants flourish in the warm climate. Another recommendation for a wonderful day trip is a rail excursion on the scenic Centovalli line to Stresa via picturesque villages, waterfalls and vineyards.

TWO AND MULTI CENTRE HOLIDAYS
Why not consider a multi centre holiday, combining one of the balmy Ticino resorts with a stay in picturesque Weggis or Lucerne. The journey itself will be a highlight of your holiday, including rail carriages with panoramic windows and the nostalgic Gotthard Panorama Express on Lake Lucerne. Or travel on the dramatic Bernina Express to compare the lakeside delights of the Lake Maggiore and Lake Lugano resorts with a decidedly alpine destination such as St. Moritz and Davos.
