Solothurn, on the River Aare at the south foot of the Jura mountain range dates back to Roman times. This splendid baroque city contains eleven churches and chapels, eleven historic fountains and eleven towers as it became the eleventh canton to join the Swiss Confederation. With undoubtedly the finest baroque town in Switzerland combining Italian grandeur with French charm and Swiss stability.
Stroll through this picturesque town admiring the architecture and wind your way through the mediaeval alleyways. Countless street cafes, bars, restaurants and shops invite visitors to linger. The river Aare, which flows through the centre of Solothurn, offers many a snug place in the restaurants directly on its banks with views across the water.
