![]() |
Situated in the farthest corner of Switzerland in the beautiful Lower Engadin you will find the spa resort of Scuol which is split into two traditional areas ‘lower’ and ‘upper’ with the main street running between the two. This authentic Engadin village with its old town squares and narrow streets dominated by 500 year old Engadin houses with their traditional ‘Sgraffiti’ decorated walls. Unique to Scuol are the 10 spa fountains which have two pipes of running water - one for normal drinking water and the other with natural mineral water.
The Lower Engadin has been isolated over the centuries and is proud of its heritage and Romansch culture which is still spoken and taught in schools although there are many different dialects even between neighbouring villages.
Scuol is on the edge of the Swiss National Park which is the largest protected area in Switzerland. In addition to the many trekking trails in the park there is also an interactive exhibition at the visitor centre in nearby Zernez.

The Swiss National Park
The Swiss National Park was founded in 1914 and is a strictly protected wilderness where flora and fauna can develop freely and the natural processes are allowed to run their course unhindered. A visit to the National Park offers a fascinating experience amidst a truly natural landscape. It is well worth visiting the National Park Centre at Zernez before setting off to explore the area along its many walking trails and you can also take the Postbus from Zernez to various stops within the National Park.
Tarasp Castle
This impressive castle which you can see from the train just before Scuol, dates back to 11th century and belonged to Austria until 1803 and although it was laid siege to and fought over several times it was never captured. After it was transferred to Swiss Graubünden ownership it fell into disrepair until it was bought in 1900 by Karl Lingner who was captivated by the empty and decaying castle and he had it completely restored. Sadly he died before he was able to move into the castle. Since 1919, Tarasp Castle is open to visitors, who can view the knights' halls and ballrooms, old bedrooms, the castle chapel and the organ with its 2,500 pipes. The castle also offers public organ concerts during the summer.
Guided tours are available and you can travel from Scuol by Postbus.
