Flims

Graubünden

Situated on a wide sunny terrace overlooking the Rhine Valley, Flims is a summer wonderland for the active with 230k of mountain bike trails and over 250k of hiking trails, leading you to countless panoramic lookouts offering views across Graubünden’s incredible mountainous terrain.

Rhine Gorge

The Vorderrhein counts as the official source of the Rhine, it flows out of Lake Toma at the foot of Piz Badus, not far from Sedrun. Shortly after Ilanz, the Vorderrhein disappears for 16 km into the Rhein Gorge, the ‘Little Swiss Canyon’. Here it thunders between the mighty scree mountains, steep limestone rock faces and bizarre formation carved by the forces of erosion.
About  10,000 years ago, at the end of the last Ice Age, 10-15 km of rock came plummeting down the region of the Segnes Pass near Flims into the river and filled the valley from Ilanz to Reichenau. This was by far the biggest rock fall in the Alps.
Since then, the Vorderrhein has been carving its relentless way through masses of scree, creating an extraordinary landscape of might towers and deep chasms.
Recommended the ‘Il Spir’ viewing platform in Conn for breathtaking views of the imposing Rhein Gorge.

A day set aside for a visit to the Rhine Gorge (Swiss Grand Canyon) is a must, this walk is classed as easy and takes around 2½ hours. The route leaves from Flims Waldhaus to Lake Cauma with its turquoise green waters and picturesque bays, through the Flims’ dense forest with its huge pine trees before descending into the Rhine Gorge. The views on the way down are impressive with massive rock formations towering above the raging river crashing through its narrow bed.

Lake Cauma

With its turquoise-green water and its picturesque bays, Lake Cauma surpasses many a Mediterranean beach. Its name suits the “relaxed” atmosphere that is appreciated by the guests of the bathing lake and beaches. Why not combine a stay at the lake with a walk? A refreshing dip in the pleasantly cool waters – the lake is fed by underground streams - is especially enjoyable after a longer hike. Let your mind wander and your eye drift from the small island over the pine forest that almost completely surrounds the lake and back to the pier where a rented boat is perhaps just casting off.
Restaurant and bathing area open June to September.

Hiking

With 250 km of signposted hiking trails over the mountains, across the gorges and through the forests, the region really is a paradise for nature lovers. Inquisitive hikers can be seen walking along the themed trails against the imposing mountain backdrop, and foodies can choose one of three culinary trails, which allow you to dine as you savour the natural wonders of the area. The historic Pinut via ferrata is enticing as a particular challenge. And finally, the Cauma, Cresta and Laax mountain lakes are a great place to cool down.
