Bernina Express

Chur - Davos - St Moritz - Pontresina - Tirano - Lugano (post bus from Tirano)

Cross the Alps from north to south or vice versa in style! The Bernina Express offers breathtaking views from the beautiful first and second class panorama cars.

You can choose from three different departure points, Chur which starts down in the Chur/Rhien Valley, climbing via the impressive Landwasser Viaduct to Filisur, where we join the line from Davos. We now scale an incredible 400m up the Albula Valley between Bergün and Preda, which is made possible by crossing six towering viaducts, three spiral tunnels and two helical tunnels.

At Pontresina we meet the line from St Moritz where the climb continues as we ride over graceful viaducts, through galleries hewn into the sheer rock, through switch-back tunnels along mountain streams, glaciers and even an Alpine garden.

Technical buffs will enjoy the fact that the train climbs up to 2,235m high Bernina Pass and drops down over 1,800m to Tirano without the help of a rack-and-pinion mechanism.

Enjoy lunch in Tirano before your return journey where you can appreciate the scenery from a different perspective or continue your journey to Lugano.

The journey to Lugano continues from Tirano by air-conditioned bus, through Veltlin's vineyards, past Lake Como into Switzerland's sunniest corner, Lugano in the Ticino region. A superlative alpine route!
