Holidays in the Bernese Oberland - Switzerland

Tranquil lakes and magestic mountains with flower-decked alpine villages

Holidays in the Bernese Oberland, unlike no other region of Switzerland, offer so many varied places to visit with different types of transport, where every turn of the wheel is to discover something new.

Dominated by the Jungfrau mountains and the two lakes of Thun and Brienz, this region offers everything you would expect from a traditional view of Switzerland. Stunning traffic-free mountain villages such as Wengen and Mürren, each perched on opposite sides overlooking the Lauterbrunnen valley. Grindelwald, a larger mountain village, offers a wealth of visits including the Eiger mountain which stands like a sentry above the village.

Lower down we have Wilderswil, a charming village close to both lakes, with its own mountain railway which goes up the Schynige Platte. Interlaken is the main town, which makes a great base for visiting both the mountains and the lakes.

On Lake Brienz the charming resort of Bonigen is the closest to Interlaken, with Brienz and stunning Giessbach at the other end of the lake, where just along the Hasli Valley is the village of Meiringen an excellent centre to visit this outstanding area of natural beauty. Lake Thun boasts the small resorts of Gunten close to the famous Oberhofen castle and the picturesque resort of Spiez in an ideal lakeside setting, with its own castle and marina and the beautiful small of Thun itself rises from the lake with views over the snow covered high Alps.

The best way to see the fantastic beauty of Switzerland is to strike out on your own and use the unrivalled network of small mountain railways and cable cars to explore in your own time and at your own pace. These are a selection of trips available in the Bernese Oberland - all the mountain and lakeside destinations mentioned have terraced restaurants where you can relax with a drink or maybe stop and admire the views over lunch.
