Bern
Capital of Switzerland and without a doubt a real gem of a city, the old town built high on a steep sided peninsular above the river Aare, owes its style and layout to the 15th century from when many of its fantastic arcades and original layout survives from. There are more than 6km of well maintained arcades which combined with ancient towers, quaint squares, attracvtive fountains and narrow steels festnooned with flags and flowers give Bern a delightfully evocative feel - a real delight to walk around. The skyline is pierced by the cathedral which stands proudly over the river Aare with its steep ramparts plunging down to the river. The bear from where the city derives its name is still to be seen in the cities current bear pit. Other attractions include the incredile clock tower with its astronomical clock dating back to the 16th century and Einstein's house from where he wrote his theory of relativity in 1905. Overall a wonderful city with something for everyone.
