Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway The original historical route of the Glacier Express past the Rhone Glacier

This wonderful line stretching 17.8km, is one of the most spectacular train routes in Switzerland. Originally built as part of the Glacier Express route over the Furka Pass it was replaced by a tunnel opened in 1982 which now allows the Glacier Express to operate all year.

With this section of line no longer needed as all Glacier Express trains use the new tunnel, it was planned to close this section of the line but with fantastic local support the ‘Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway ‘ has bought the service back and it now operates this unique line from the end of June to September.

Nostalgic steam locomotives and original carriages

To reopen the line the original steam locomotives and rolling stock needed to be repatriated from Vietnam and lovingly restored. This historical rolling stock now operates from Oberwald to Realp and passes the impressive Rhone Glacier which gave the original railway route the name ‘Glacier Express’.

The steam train starts from the canton of Valais at Oberwald (1366m) climbing to Gletsch station continuing up and passing the view of the Rhone Glacier to the next stop at Muttbach-Belvédère. From here we enter the 1,874m long tunnel to the highest station at Furka 2,160m. The train now starts its descent and crosses the Steinstafel viaduct  to the last stop at Tiefenbach, from where we continue down over the Steffenbach folding bridge, which is dismantled each winter, through three tunnels, across the Wyler Bridge over the Furkareuss river to Realp (1,546m) in the canton of Uri.

To enjoy this wonderful experience we recommend a stay in Brigor Andermatt. All tickets and reservations can be included in our arrangements.
