Experience one of the favourite Swiss rail journeys for yourself, with a scenic train ride between Montreux and Zweisimmen. The 2 hour GoldenPass Line journey takes you from the shores of Lake Geneva up through the mountains, past alpine resorts such as Gstaad and into the Simmental Valley farmlands.
Recommended - the front coach of the panoramic train has a first class VIP section, right at the very front of the train where you feel as if you are driving! Special supplements apply for these VIP seats (limited availability) and reservations are compulsory.
Why not alight at one of the interesting stops along the route - enjoy a walk in the countryside or simply pause for a leisurely lunch.
Château-d'Oex: A village at 1000m in the heart of the Pays d'Enhaut, with fabulous mountainscapes and traditional chalets. Thanks to its favourable micro-climate, Château-d'Oex is nowadays a centre for hot air ballooning, with passenger flights available throughout the year. La Pierreuse is a beautiful pre-alpine walking area south of Château-d'Oex with rocky areas, moorland, forests and an abundance of flowers.
Rougemont: Visit traditional Rougemont with its decorated chalets dating back a hundred years or more. You can try the alpine cheese Etivaz, which is still made over an open wood fire. While you are here, take a look at the mineral and fossil collection and the romanesque church of St. Nicolas. The original building dates from the 11th century, while the roof and tower are 17th century and typical of the Bernese Oberland.
Gstaad: Gstaad has been attracting the rich and famous for many years and has a wide variety of smart shops, galleries and restaurants. Yet this picturesque resort is also surrounded on three sides by the beautiful mountains of the Bernese Oberland with 300km of scenic walking trails to explore.
Zweisimmen: The Rinderberg cableway leads up directly from the village centre and offers fantastic walking during the summer. There are several themed trails, for example, the Obersimmental ‘home trail’ which invites you to admire the magnificent Simmental farmhouses.
The GoldenPass Line panoramic trains departs daily from Montreux station. There are unrestricted views from 2nd and 1st class and 8 VIP seats at the head of the train (available for an additional reservation fee).
There are also a number of Classic trains that operate on the route, with Belle Époque coaches and a wine cellar. Please ask for details.
This excursion is highly recommended and should be pre-booked as it is a very popular day out!
