Chillon Castle is located in the most beautiful setting imaginable - on the shores of Lake Geneva, right at the foot of the Alps. It is a wonderful way to spend a morning or afternoon - visiting the castle and learning about its history. This monument has over 1000 years of history and has always inspired artists and writers, from Rousseau to Victor Hugo to Lord Byron. Go back in time as each hall and room unveils a part of the castle’s fascinating history.
Visiting the Castle: The lake side of the castle is where you will find the princely residential rooms while the mountain side is a true fortress with watchtowers, ramparts, a moat and turrets. You can take the tour of the castle at your leisure - a brochure with map is available from the entrance or you can hire an audio guide. Don't miss the 4 great halls (where the Dukes of Savoy held lavish banquets) the 14th century chapel and the weapons room.
Discovery Walk: So that children can also enjoy their visit, there is a new treasure map designed for 6 to 10 year olds. The map will guide them through the fortress and the different rooms in the castle.
Events: Temporary exhibitions are often held here, such as '1816-2016: Lord Byron's return'. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, the castle puts on 'Medieval Magic', with traditional music and dance, Christmas stories, falconry, artisan workshops and more. Visitors can also pause for a drink beside the roaring fire. nb Events usually incur a higher entrance charge.
Shopping: The castle boutique offers a wide range of books, toys and costumes with a medieval theme. Why not try the Chillon chocolate, tea and in particular the Chillon wine, which is made and bottled in the castle itself.
Refreshments: There is a picnic area with vending machines inside the castle and a snack bar and picnic area just outside the castle entrance.
Chillon is easily accessible by boat, bus and even on foot:
By Boat: There are regular boat services from Lausanne, Vevey and Montreux. The boats call at the Chillon landing stage which is just 100m from the castle.
By Bus: If you are travelling by bus (Line number 201) from Vevey or Montreux, the bus stop is in front of the castle. Buses run approximately every 10 to 20 minutes.
On Foot: There is a lovely lakeside 'flower-path' which you can walk along from Montreux all the way to the castle, which takes approximately 40 minutes.
The castle is open every day of the year, except the 1st of January and the 25th of December.
