This unforgettable journey takes just 1 hour, but in that time climbs 1,000m on the journey from Chur to Arosa. The Arosa Line celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2014 and is part of the famous Rhaetian Railway.
The journey gets off to a leisurely start in Chur, with a sedate trundle through the historic streets - past the town walls, the Maltese tower and the Obertor gate. Minutes later, the train is wending its way through unspoilt nature and the mountainous landscape of Schanfigg. The route takes you across the famous Langwieser Viaduct, that iconic feat of engineering spanning the Plessur River. Your destination is Arosa, situated at 1,800m above sea level. Here you can enjoy a day in the Alps, with plenty of fresh mountain air, walking trails and good food.
Chur: Chur is Switzerland's oldest town and capital of the region. The Old Town boasts an 800 year old cathedral as well as historic streets and pretty squares. This is a fabulous place in which to discover the long history of Swiss culture.
Langwieser Viaduct: The awesome Langwieser Viaduct stretches for 284m across the Plessur River, at a height of 62m. 100 years ago, pioneering railway engineers constructed what was then the first railway bridge of its size to be made from reinforced concrete. Today, it is considered a heritage site of national importance.
Arosa: This pretty village sits high in the mountains and offers over 200km of well prepared walking paths through a magnificent alpine landscape. The main Poststrasse - with its variety of shops and restaurants - snakes up from the Obersee Lake to Innerarosa where you will find a 15th century chapel.
Weisshorn Cable Car: Take the cable car from Arosa into the high mountains. The panorama is unforgettable: in good weather, over 2,000 peaks can be seen from the Weisshorn, as well as views back down to Chur. The mid station has some wonderful walks and relaxing mountain restaurants.
Squirrel Trail: A recommended walk from Arosa for nature lovers: on this trail you are guaranteed to encounter squirrels aplenty. The 90 minute hike leads from the Waldhotel National through fir woods up to the high plateau at Maran. There is a barbecue pit along the way and the restaurant at Maran also allows picnics.
