Montreux Christmas Market With magical winter scenic rail - see Switzerland in the snow

23rd November to 24th December 2017

One of Europe's biggest and best Christmas Markets, Montreux Noël welcomes thousands of visitors every year. Numerous magical locations are used as settings for shopping and entertainment so that even those who come for a couple of days can experience the winter beauty of Lake Geneva and the nearby mountains. Open into the evening, this is a chance to soak up the wonderful Christmas atmosphere of Montreux.

The main Christmas Market is held on the shore of the lake and features around 160 stalls. Here, shoppers can browse and choose Christmas gifts as diverse as sheepskin gloves, handmade soaps or sweet treats. There are traditional, handcrafted wooden nativity scenes on sale as well as more modern and sparkly decorations for your home. You can enjoy freshly made crèpes or waffles, or spoil yourself at the oyster and Champagne stall. Musical entertainment adds to the cheery atmosphere, from festive brass bands to traditional Alpenhorns and fabulous Gospel concerts.

Head to beautiful Chillon Castle - just along the lake - which takes on a fairy tale appearance for the unique Medieval Market. On Saturdays and Sundays from 2nd to 17th December, fair maidens and gallant knights serve on the stalls and provide historical entertainment, such as traditional weaving and leather working, medieval dancing and birds of prey demonstrations. Or try the enchanting Elves Village, daily in the gardens of the Casino Barrière with its circus, marionettes, reindeer park, chocolate and candle making workshops. The Lumberjack Village is found close to the main station and offers a welcoming log cabin with plenty of warm drinks, great food and a very festive atmosphere. For children, or just the young at heart, do not miss the spectacular journey up to Rochers-de-Naye, for it is here that Santa has his grotto at 2,042 metres above sea level. The train journey is worth the trip simply for the beautiful views. Available Wednesdays-Sundays during the Christmas Market period.

Winter Scenic Rail

Extend your stay and enjoy Switzerland's perfect snowscapes

Montreux is perfectly placed as the starting point for a classic scenic rail journey. So, after the Christmas Market, travellers can enjoy the next part of their holiday - taking in wonderful views of the wintry countryside en route to a stay in another part of this beautiful country. Winter can turn the Swiss sky a deep blue, while the snow covering the mountains and pastures is an unspoiled blanket of purest white. While you are warm and cosy in the carriage, perhaps enjoying a steaming coffee, the passing scenery produces mile upon mile of mesmerising beauty. Even for those who have previously enjoyed a summer scenic rail trip, this is an experience not to be missed.

There are two winter scenic rail options from Montreux. The destination resorts shown are just examples - please ask if you have a different itinerary in mind.

 The GoldenPass Line

A classic 3 hour rail journey on panoramic carriages to Interlaken. There is a good choice of hotels in town, which is a great base for enjoying many winter lake and mountain excursions.

This famous train starts its journey in Montreux and slowly wends its way past the snow of Les Avants, Gstaad (famous as one of the world's most glamourous ski resorts) and the mountains of the Bernese Oberland. There's an easy change of train at Zweisimmen, then you can sit back and enjoy the spectacular journey to the beautiful lakeside village of Spiez . The track hugs the Lake Thun shoreline as it makes its final approach into Interlaken.

 The Luzern-Interlaken Express

This journey connects to the GoldenPass Line, for those wishing to stay in Lucerne rather than Interlaken.

After the journey from Montreux as described above, you'll board the Luzern-Interlaken Express, whose panoramic windows afford wonderful wintry views as you pass through the countryside. Even visitors who have visited this area many times in summer will be delighted to experience a completely new perspective on the scenery. The train travels alongside pretty Lake Brienz towards Meiringen and the stunning Brünig Pass before arriving in Lucerne.
