Rigi Walking - Central Switzerland
A selection of mountain walks
Rigi Kaltbad - Lower Firstweg - First - Upper Firstweg - Rigi Kaltbad
This easy walk goes from the village square in Kaltbad to Rigi First, with some of the walk on an asphalted track. Along the way, there are benches with lovely views and a playground; indeed the path is accessible for prams and wheelchairs. You should note particularly the Reform church designed by Zurich architect Ernst Giesel, the typical gompholite rock faces and an information point about the origins and geology of Mount Rigi. From the sunshine terrace in First, the idyllic upper Firstweg takes you back to Kaltbad… a lovely round trip that is not at all strenuous.

The broad path here follows the route of the former Scheidegg railway. Then from Bärenstube First, the path passes through a lightly wooded area with views of the two Mythen peaks, towering majestically over the Schwyz Valley. Rigi Kaltbad - Känzeli Viewpoint - Rigi Kaltbad
At the start of this easy walk, the rock chapel is worth a visit. The Kaltbad spring gushes from a crevace in the rock here, and has been attracting tourists since the 16th century. It was the first and most Spartan form of spa therapy which now lives on in the modern Mineral Baths and Spa, stunningly designed by top architect Mario Botta. The level trail leads through lush woodland, past interesting rock formations and to the magnificent viewpoint of Känzeli. There a wonderful all-round view opens up of the Kreuztrichter (the central point of Lake Lucerne), Lucerne itself and the majestic panorama of the Alps. In 1868, Queen Victoria visited this spot and described her enthusiasm in her diary.
