Buirebähnli - Central Switzerland
Traditional Swiss cableways in the Engelberg countryside
Prices vary - payable locally. Use your Half Fare Card to reach the villages.
This is a wonderful way to explore the Engelberg mountains. Farmers have been operating these small cable cars for many years and they have even been known to use them to transport livestock up the mountain! The lifts are generally 4 seater gondolas or chairlifts and will take you to unposilt areas of natural beauty that you probably wouldn't have otherwise come across. There are some scenic walks to be enjoyed and many of the farms also have a rustic restaurant offering traditional fare.
These are just a selection of the many small lifts in the area.
Wolfenschiessen - Diegisbalm: 4 man gondola, run by the Wyrsch family. There are several walks of 1-2 hours' duration in the area including Bielen, Oberalp and Wirzweli via Wissifluh.
Diegisbalm - Oberalp: 4 man gondola, run by the Arnold family. The organic cattle farm is situated on a sunny plateau. Walk in around 30 minutes to the mountain restaurant at Gummenalp or to the scenic Chärnoupärsee in an hour and half.
Haldigrat: 4 man chairlift, run by the Mathis family. There is a restaurant offering hearty mountain food. Many walks in the area including the 'ZigZag' paths to Oberrickenbach and the lake at Bannalp. You can even hike back to Engelberg in around 6 hours.
Staefeli-Aebnet: 4 man gondola, run by the Stadler-Warer family (June-September only). The mountain restaurant offers typical Swiss dishes and the Fürenalp is close at hand for a number of lovely alpine walks. Lovely views to the Spannort and Mount Titlis.
Untertrübsee - Obertrübsee - Älplerseil: 8 man gondola, run by the Wagner family. Enjoy lunch at the restaurant, with its locally produced cheeses and sausages. Attractions here include the Trübsee lake and walks as far as the JochPass at 2,207m.
Other lifts include: Mettlen - Rugisbalm, Rugisbalm - Lutersee, Zälgli - Brändlen, Geissmattli - Büelen
Engelberg lies at the heart of this walking area with its mountains and small lakes. There is a free village bus to take you to major cable car base stations at the very start of your journey. You can also use the public buses and trains to strike further out into the countryside to reach the farms and villages.
The Buirebähnli generally operate all year round, but may not be daily in the winter. Lifts are always subject to weather conditions.
