This is a beautiful sport for walking, enjoying the views and breathing in fresh mountain air. The Hammetschwand Lift is the highest exterior elevator in Europe. It connects a spectacular rock path with the Hammetschwand lookout point on the Bürgenstock plateau overlooking sparkling Lake Lucerne. Please note: the Bürgenstock Railway will remain closed until the re-opening of the Bürgenstock resort in 2017. Alternative access shown below.
Hammetschwand Lift: This is the highest public external elevator in Europe and the fastest elevator in the world. The metal lattice tower has a surface area of 2×2 metres, is 118 metres high and is located on a 44 meter high rock pit. The elevator entrance, the engine room and the first 14 metres are situated completely inside the mountain, while the next 30 metres are elevated above ground. The whole trip lasts approximately 50 seconds! At the top station of Hammetschwand, there are breathtaking views of the Lake of Lucerne and the Alps.
Taverne 1879: The restaurant has recently been renovated and offers 65 seats as well as a generous terrace for visitors and hikes. Guests can enjoy authentic Swiss cuisine here. The restaurant is open from Monday to Friday 09.00-18.00 and is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
This magnificient mountain peninsula is reached by lake steamer from Lucerne to Stansstad and then by PostBus to Bürgenstock. If you would like to try the Hammetschwand lift, it is a scenic 35 minute walk, rewarded by tremendous views of the lake.
(The alternative method of transport - the Bürgenstock Railway - will remain closed until the re-opening of the Bürgenstock resort in 2017).
