The Trail of the Three Waterfalls - Bernese Oberland Scenic walk from Bönigen to Brienz

This hike takes in three very different waterfalls of the Interlaken region: the woodland Erschwandenbach Falls, the mystical Mülibach Falls above Iseltwald and the impressive Giessbach Falls which thunder into Lake Brienz.

The hike can be enjoyed by walkers of most fitness levels and ages, since you can enjoy the whole trip 6 hour trip - or choose one or two of the stages and travel by boat for the rest of the journey.

The boat from Interlaken Ost to the Bӧnigen boat station starting point takes 20 minutes and from Brienz back to Interlaken the journey is 1 hour 20 minutes. 


Bönigen - Erschwandenbach Falls - Iseltwald Fura

Leaving the boat station, walk along the banks of shimmering Lake Brienz for around 1km before following the road through the woodlands towards Erschwandenbach. You’ll come upon the Falls in a clearing, the light flooding through the trees to illuminate the water. Continue along the secluded forest path, which eventually opens out to a wider road along the cliffs and the Fura (hilltop) of Iseltwald.

Iseltwald Fura - Mülibach Falls - Giessbach Falls

After enjoying the view above the little fishing town of Iseltwald, continue along the cliff road and the footpath that takes you to the Mülibach Falls. This beautiful spot high above Iseltwald is a wonderful place to sit awhile and enjoy the tranquillity. The hiking trail then continues through the forest and into increasingly open areas with spectacular views of Lake Brienz. You’ll eventually come to the impressive Giessbach Falls, which cascade noisily into the turquoise lake.

Alternative: 20 minute boat trip from Iseltwald to Giessbach

Giessbach Falls - Brienz

The historic Grand Hotel Giessbach stands like a fairytale castle above the lake and makes a good spot for a refreshing drink while you enjoy the views. From here, you can ride on the oldest funicular in Europe (1879) down to the quay. Alternatively, if you would like to complete the walk, you can follow the forest path to the Axalpstrasse and then meander along the lake shore to the beautiful village of Brienz.
