The Brienzer Rothorn nostalgic cog railway line has been chugging its way from the Berner Oberland village of Brienz to the Brienzer Rothorn since 1892. It is the only steam powered cogwheel railway system with three generations of steam locomotives to provide daily steam train services during the entire summer season from June to October.

The steam railway starts at 566m above sea level and takes just an hour to meander up to the Rothorn at 2,350m. Your journey will take you through romantic meadows, cut through high rock faces and finally travel over to the Rothorn Kulm. The alpine restaurant is a short uphill walk from the cable car station where you will be rewarded with stunning panoramic views - a perfect spot for sunrises and sunsets to make any meal a memorable occasion.

The panoramic views from the summit are beautiful and breathtaking. You will have views of the Alps of Central Switzerland - including Pilatus, Rigi and Titlis -  and the Bernese Alps with the likes of the famous Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. On a clear day you can even see the Chasseral in the Jura Mountains.

Steam Sausage Express: A truly unique and certainly a high point of any holiday. From early June every Wednesday the Sausage Express is not to be missed. The Express train stops at the half way point 'Planalp' where your driver and onboard fireman will cook and serve you sausages from the locomotive's original steam kettle. The conductor will serve you their patent 'rack rail' bread and included in the price is a bottle of soft drink. Departures are from Brienz at 10.00. As spaces are limited it is highly recommended to pre-book your seats (reservable up to 14 days in advance). Prices are on request.

Footplate Rides on a Steam Locomotive: Make that childhood dream come true and ride the footplate of a steam locomotive on a Swiss mountain railway! The experience is a half a day and your visit is accompanied by one of their qualified guides which also includes being shown how the locomotive is prepared. Safety and operations are explained and any of your questions will be answered. The highlight of the course is a one hour footplate ride up to the Rothorn Kulm. Reservable up to 14 days in advance and there are two departures from Brienz available daily at 08.30 & 09.30 from June to October. Prices are on request.

Restaurant: At the summit you will find the Rothorn Kulm mountain restaurant and hotel with its grand panorama terrace and breathtaking views over the Berner Oberland. It is a non smoking restaurant and is wheelchair accessible. The restaurant offers sumptuous breakfasts, hearty lunches and romantic à la carte evening dinners. In addition the open terrace is a wonderful way to watch sunrises and sunsets over the Bernese Alps and is the perfect backdrop to any memorable meal or occasion.
