Cross scenic south-western Switzerland, from the shore of Lake Geneva to the Matterhorn
A very pleasant journey across southern Switzerland, with views over the picturesque Rhone Valley.
Many visitors will experience the route as part of a Grand Tour, as the journey links two of the most famous scenic routes in Switzerland: the GoldenPass Line and the Glacier Express. However, this 2 hour journey is worth considering in its own right for its lovely views. You can enjoy it as a day trip or create a fabulous 2 centre lakes and mountains holiday with hotel stays in Montreux and Zermatt.
The journey itself starts in Montreux and travels along the eastern edge of Lake Geneva before heading to the vineyards around Aigle. At Bex, it picks up the route of the River Rhone, which it follows through glorious countryside to Martigny, Sion and the huge Pfyn-Finges nature park. The next stop is Visp, which enjoys one of the sunniest spots in Switzerland and has a charming Old Town. At Visp, the train leaves the Rhone and heads south through the Matter Valley and up to the high Alps of Zermatt and the Matterhorn.
